Samaraweera, Perera helps Sri Lanka to beat India

January 5th, 2010 No comments

Thilan Samaraweera’s second ODI century and Thissara Perera’s gem of a cameo tilted the balance as India slumped to a five-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in their tri-series opener here on Tuesday.

Defending a 279-run total, India fancied their chances in their first outing of the new year but the 122-run stand between Samaraweera (105 not out off 106 balls) and Kumar Sangakkara (60), followed by Perera’s breath-taking unbeaten 15-ball 36 turned the match on its head.

The spirited Lankans cruised to 283 for five in 48 overs and their second successive win in the tournament would be some solace for the islanders who had lost both the Test and ODI series in India before coming to this tournament.

Team news
Dhoni didn’t name India’s final XI, but Yuvraj’s absence at training signalled towards Virat Kohli getting a game. Sreesanth’s absence may not mean an ODI debut for rookie Sudeep Tyagi, because Praveen Kumar could fill up that opening. Harbhajan will take the lead spinner’s role and the allrounder’s spot should go to Ravindra Jadeja.

India: (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Ashish Nehra.

Sri Lanka’s line-up is likely to be significantly different from the Twenty20s, with key changes at the top and in the middle. With Jayasuriya playing in the middle order, Upul Tharanga will open. The last middle-order spot will be a toss-up between Thilan Samaraweera and Thilina Kandamby, the latter being the frontrunner.

Sri Lanka: (probable) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt/wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 6 Thilina Kandamby/Thilan Samaraweera, 7 Sanath Jayasuriya, 8 Angelo Mathews, 9 Muttiah Muralithara, 10 and 11 Nuwan Kulasekera/Dilhara Fernando/Ajantha Mendis.

Live updates: Dhoni hits 100, India 726-9 declared

December 4th, 2009 No comments

Mahendra Singh Dhoni smashed his third Test century after Virender Sehwag missed a world record third triple century to boost India to a record total on day three of the third and final Test at the Brabourne stadium, in Mumbai , on Friday.

With wickets falling at the other end, Dhoni took the attacking route and went after the Sri Lankan bowlers to complete his century off 154 deliveries with a huge six that disappeared out of the ground.

Dhoni finished unbeaten on 100, hitting six sixes and three boundaries in his 154-ball knock as India declared their first innings on 726 for nine in 163.3 overs to take a huge lead of 333 runs. This is India’s highest total in Test cricket beating the 705 for seven declared they made against Australia at Sydney in January 2004.

Pragyan Ojha was not out on five from 14 deliveries as the two batsmen were involved in an unbroken stand of 56 runs in 72 deliveries for the last wicket.

Morning session: (29 overs, 93 runs, 2 wickets)

Sri Lanka did not take the second new ball after 80 overs and continued with spin from both ends.

Dravid, on 62, was lucky to survive. He got an edge and was caught by the wicketkeeper off Rangana Herath in the third over of the day, but the umpire turned down the huge appeal. Two deliveries later he stepped down the wicket and lofted Herath for a huge straight six.

There was tragedy to follow in the next over when Sehwag was dismissed caught and bowled by Muralitharan after a cracking innings of 293. The opener, who hit 40 boundaries and seven sixes in his 254-ball knock, was beaten in the flight by Muralitharan, bowling round the wicket, and ended up scooping the ball back to the bowler, who fumbled before completing the catch. (458-2, 82.2)

Post-lunch session: (27 overs, 93 runs, 4 wickets)

Tendulkar completed his half-century, his 54th in Tests, with a single on the leg side against Kulasekara in the first over of the session.

Both pacers, Kulasekara and Welegedara, kept things tight after lunch with the Indian batsmen looking to get their eye in. Laxman broke the shackles when he hit Welegedara for consecutive boundaries through the leg side in the 114th over.

Just when the Mumbai crowd was coming back to life, they were stunned into silence when Kulasekara claimed the wicket of Tendulkar for 53. The right-hander hit six boundaries in his 103-ball knock before he was beaten by the incoming delivery from Kulasekara and inside edged it back on to his stumps. (558-4, 114.2)

After Sehwag’s vintage display on the second day, Sri Lanka managed to restore sanity as Tendulkar and Laxman took 147 deliveries to add 71 runs for the fourth wicket.

India make fluent start in final Test

December 3rd, 2009 No comments

MUMBAI — India made a blistering reply to Sri Lanka’s 393 in the third and final cricket Test, racing to 92-0 in 18 overs by lunch on the second day here on Thursday.

Openers Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay made light of the bounce and turn on the Brabourne stadium wicket to flay Sri Lankan seamers and spinners alike.

Sehwag followed his 131 in the second Test which India won by an innings and 144 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series, with a typically aggressive 53 not out off 60 balls.

Vijay, playing the Test only because Gautam Gambhir was unavailable due to his sister’s wedding, was unbeaten on 38 with five boundaries.

Sehwag hit left-arm spinner Rangana Herath for two sixes, the second one taking him past 6,000 runs in his 72nd Test.

Earlier, Sri Lanka were dismissed 25 minutes after the start when they resumed their first innings at the overnight total of 366-8.

All-rounder Angelo Mathews was run out on 99 as he attempted a second run to reach his maiden Test century after playing a shot to deep square-leg.
